I am Peter Azzopardi, a story teller originally from a council estate in the East End of London. My earliest memory of growing up in Hackney is of my mum being mugged while she was walking me and my younger sister to Hoxton market. I think, it was that experience that made me so aware of my surroundings and the different characters I met and continue to meet on a daily basis. My songs are based on other people's stories, mainly because I don't have one of my own. I had a great childhood my parents are still together, I'm not depressed and never been heartbroken, but, I do seem to have a knack of taking a strangers tale and turning it in to an interesting song as if it's my own.
My mum was a big fan of The Specials and Elvis, my dad more Motown, although the Beatles and Rod Stuart were often on the record player.
I would say my style takes influence from those artists, my personal favourite though is Billy Bragg, his energy and gritty lyrics are definitely something I try to capsulate in my songs and on stage. My live set tends to mix the emotions, some of my songs are deep and take you toa dark place with close to the mark lyrics, like Hello Geezer a slow song, a story of a girl I knew who fell on hard times and became a brass and drug addict. Then there is Walk Away Jack, about the time a friend of mine got knocked by a prominent London gangster who told him to "Walk away son". Walk Away is a lot more comical and ska'ish in style, where as Molly Mae is out and out in your face Punk. as well as acoustic sets I have a band I call "The Motive", 4 excellent musicians that match my cheeky personality, passion and enthusiasm on the stage, with them I recently sold out The Dublin Castle, in Camden for my first headline show and have sold out the Water Rats for a co headline this coming February.
